20 YEARS OF AMENRA
October 18 to December 21 2019
The post-metal collective Amenra from Kortrijk has been active for 20 years.
Since 1999, the group has grown into a live phenomenon at home and abroad.
An Amenra concert is an ominous total experience that grabs you by the throat, baffles, but above all relieves and frees you. This intensity applies for both the overwhelming amplified shows as it does for the intimate acoustic line-up. Music, and art in general, is for Amenra a tool for processing loss and grief. They channel their own suffering into a source of power. A moment to distance yourself from provocative, inner demons. A moment of comfort and solidarity for those in need of it.
This total experience is - be it in their live shows, but also in their videos, artwork and all things Amenra - invariably enhanced by a powerful and recognizable aesthetic, visual framework.
This visual language was created during collaborations with artists from their own collective, the ‘Church of Ra’, but also with Belgian artists such as Berlinde De Bruyckere, Michaël Borremans or Willy Vanderperre.
Amenra thus became a lot more than just that intense live band, they developed - and continue to do so - an artistic network in which they provide that reinforcing aesthetic layer with like-minded visual or performing artists.
Together with the cultural center in Menen, Amenra brings a sophisticated program that focuses on five aspects that have formed the group over the past 20 years.
This translates into an artistic exhibition, an acoustic concert, a fire ritual on the Leie Island in collaboration with Johan Tahon, two dance performances and a concluding concert evening.
“We do not just want to look back but seize this moment to introduce the public to artists we like."
